DAMA International - Iowa Chapter
September 30, 2008
Maureen Clarry will present "Negotiating and Resolving Disagreements in Data Management" at the September 30 meeting of DAMA International's, Iowa Chapter in Des Moines, Iowa.
Successful data management initiatives focus on results: finding better solutions – faster. To optimize performance, we must be able to effectively resolve issues, settle differences and implement solutions. Participants will be introduced to five conflict styles and take an instrument that will help them determine their most and least-used styles. We all use a range of styles in handling conflict that are based on our skills and the demands of the situation. By understanding and expanding on these styles, participants can improve the way they accomplish goals individually and within work groups.
Unlike many programs targeted at dealing with conflict, this course does not advocate any one style over another as the best approach to conflict. All styles are effective if applied to the appropriate situation and if used in a balanced way. This natural approach takes into account that each situation is unique and that people must operate within their own skill sets.
This highly interactive class utilizes many learning modalities including individual conflict style assessment, lecture, personal reflection, goal setting and group brainstorming.
You Will Learn:
- How to analyze your effectiveness in different situations.
- The impact that different conflict styles have on working relationships.
- Conflict management techniques to expand your skill and effectiveness in dealing with conflict and to coach others to deal with it.
Mile Hi Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI)
October 2 - 3, 2008
Maureen Clarry and Lorna Rickard will present Power, Politics, and Partnership in Strategic Projects for PMI's Mile Hi Chapter in Denver, CO. Participants will be credited 12 PDUs.
Power, Politics & Partnership in Strategic Projects is a dynamic, yawn-free leadership development program. This in-house workshop focuses on the worlds of Tops, Middles, Bottoms and Customers during turbulent times. It gets to the heart of partnership in organization life - what makes partnership so critical, what gets in the way of it developing, and what the role of leaders is in making it happen.
The centerpiece of the workshop is an organization exercise in which participants are dropped into roles as top executives, middle managers, workers and customers interacting in a chaotic, fast-paced environment. This visceral approach enables the learning to get beyond the head level to where it really hits home and sticks. Peer discussion reinforces the students' learning.
You would benefit from this course if your organization is struggling with ...
- Conflict between departments
- Misdirected energy and lost opportunities
- Finger-pointing and blaming
- Organizational silos and lack of collaboration
- Dissatisfied/disengaged customers
This workshop is based on the Organization Workshop by Power & Systems.

Database Grand Conference in Seoul, Korea
October 28, 2008
Maureen Clarry will present "Trends in Information and Data Governance" and "Top Ten Best Practices in Data Management" at the Database Grand Conference on October 28, in Seoul, Korea.
"Trends in Information and Data Governance" will discuss the results of research done by the International Association for Information and Data Quality and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2007 to gain insight into how organizations are governing their data and information assets. Their research indicates that organizations use multiple labels when referring to the activities associated with the governance of information assets. They also validate that governance related to managing information assets, in either an operational or strategic context, is difficult to do and a relatively immature process. This presentation will explore organizational structures for information / data governance including reporting structures, leadership, membership, meeting frequency, charters, and linkages to other initiatives. The partnerships required for successful governance will be examined and recommendations for success will be summarized.
"Top Ten Best Practices in Data Management" will help data professionals who are bombarded with news, tools, technologies, business demands, webinars, product demonstrations and articles about data governance, data stewardship, information management, data quality and data integration. Each year seems like it contains new solutions to the problems faced in data management. But are all these new approaches contributing to results or adding to the confusion? Good data management is achieved through a variety of policies, processes, technologies and approaches. Although many organizations focus primarily on technology, there are a variety of non-technical practices that contribute to success. Based on the presenter’s experience, this presentation will explore fundamental ingredients that contribute to achieving success in data management.
